It’s time to have a talk about the benefits of Microneedling.

Microneedling has been around for nearly 25 years but there are many still unfamiliar with this undeniably effective treatment or why it could change their skincare game, particularly when it comes to acne scarring and/or fine lines and wrinkles.

Maybe you’ve seen it circling around YouTube or Instagram if you follow beauty bloggers or skincare gurus. The before photo featuring a brave girl with an unsightly red, splotchy face but emerging days later with new, glowing skin and drastically reduced scarring as a badge for her courage.

Curious about the process? We’re here to give you the good and the not-so-pleasant parts to help you decide whether or not it’s right for you.

Simply put, microneedling is a treatment that stimulates your body’s natural healing response by using very fine short needles to puncture the first layer of skin. A microneedling pen is passed over the surface of the skin that creates micro injuries to stimulate collagen and elastin to reduce the appearance of acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and more.

Not to worry if the prospect of multiple needle wounds sounds slightly ominous to you. The micro fine needles range in diameter from 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters with the effect being more similar to tiny pin-pricks that enter only surface-level deep.

Who is Microneedling good for?

Anyone can try microneedling since it’s great for boosting overall collagen and elastin, the building blocks of a firm, youthful complexion. However, it’s ideal for those trying to kick their cell turnover into overdrive in order to heal acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and/or pigment spots. An added bonus? After microneedling and your skin is finished healing, your topical products will also feel deeply penetrating.

How often can you get a microneedling treatment?

Turnover time differs for everyone but those seeking to progressively heal problem areas should start with spacing treatments no sooner than 6 weeks apart. Just using it for maintenance? Schedule sessions quarterly.

Does microneedling hurt?

A topical numbing cream is used during microneedling treatment so pain is minimal. After treatment there may be some tenderness around sensitive areas of the face but at most we’d call the sensation uncomfortable.

What is the downtime after a microneedling treatment?

There is about a 5 day healing period which is important to keep in mind to avoid scheduling yourself into a panic with any major coinciding social engagements.

Immediately following microneedling your skin will be red like a sunburn and feel very tight. Over the next few days that redness will dissipate and your skin will start to feel dry and/or mildly itchy as the peeling process begins, revealing new, glowing skin underneath. 5 days later and you’re ready for that after picture, baby!

What should be done after a microneedling treatment?

After the treatment it’s extremely important to stay moisturized and protected so avoid extended sun exposure for a few days after microneedling. Apply sunscreen and moisturizer each morning and stay away from acids or retinol a until healed!

Pro-Tip: Dermaplaning is great to pair with a week after to fully exfoliate all of that dry, flakey skin off the surface. Facials and peels can be done either a week before or after needling!

And that’s it! Everything you need to know before trying microneedling from start to finish.
